Baby Toddler Nursery
Philosophy and Cirriculum Staff Support for Families Hours, Fees, Supplies Summary
Baby Toddler Nursery is a not-for-profit program that has provided quality, center-based care for infants and toddlers in Evanston since 1971. It was the first licensed infant day care center in Illinois and only the second in the nation. Children at Baby Toddler Nursery receive state-of-the-art, developmentally appropriate care and early learning experiences.

Baby Toddler Nursery serves 70 children from 6 weeks to 5 years of age. The children come from a variety of backgrounds, with some families paying a full fee for the Nursery's services and some families receiving financial support to help them pay our fees. Baby Toddler Nursery has a long history of leadership in providing exceptional quality services to all of Evanston’s families.

Philosophy and Curriculum
Baby Toddler Nursery is committed to providing excellent child care to very young children. We specialize in infant and toddler care and understand the unique importance of the first three years.

We use current research and theory to help us provide the best possible care and early learning experiences to nurture development during this time. Our philosophy is based on the idea that children learn best through play and active exploration. Teachers provide a wide variety of materials, experiences, and activities that help children develop skills in all areas including language, motor, and social development.

Teachers are involved with the children in their play, offering help and extending their learning. They are particularly attentive to children’s social interactions and help them develop early social skills. Babies begin by learning how to be gentle with one another while teachers help older children learn to express their feelings and needs through words.

Staff
The teachers who care for your child each day must be exceptional people. Research has shown that a teacher’s educational background is one of the most important predictors of quality care. Education does make a teacher competent. There are other qualities, however, like warmth, enthusiasm, and commitment that, combined with education, make a teacher exceptional. At Baby Toddler Nursery, we aim for exceptional. We have an outstanding and highly qualified staff and low turnover each year. Baby Toddler Nursery provides higher teacher salaries than most child care programs and excellent benefits including a retirement plan. All of the classrooms have a full-time teaching team of three people. We also have a number of floating teachers on staff who work as substitutes or as additional teachers in our classrooms.

The quality of our staff and our staffing patterns set Baby Toddler Nursery apart from other programs for infants and toddlers. We believe that very young children need and deserve as much individual attention as possible from the best qualified teachers. With many professional staff in the building and on the playgrounds, we assure that your child is always very well supervised and that all of our teachers perform to the highest standards throughout the day. Our teachers are experts in the development and needs of infants and toddlers. They will provide outstanding care and early learning experiences for your young child.

Support for Families
Because parents are the most important people in children’s lives, we also provide a variety of support services to families, helping them help their children. We have a Family Support Specialist on staff who is available to help with family management issues like finding affordable housing and health care services. The Family Support Specialist conducts workshops for parents on topics such as limit-setting and stress management.

We know that parents work hard to balance their children’s needs with their need to be responsible employees and providers for their families. We understand that families must, in fact, be able to do both. We are here to help families meet these dual challenges.
